FG Not in Discussions With Foreign Countries on Military Bases-Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has refuted claims of discussions between the Federal Government of Nigeria and foreign countries regarding the siting of foreign military bases in the country.

In a statement to the Africa Health Report on Monday, the minister stated, “The Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country. We have neither received nor are we considering any proposals from any country on the establishment of any foreign military bases in Nigeria.”

Idris emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling security challenges through existing foreign cooperation, stating, “The Nigerian government already enjoys foreign cooperation in tackling ongoing security challenges, and the President remains committed to deepening these partnerships, with the goal of achieving the national security objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The minister also urged the public to disregard the false alarms being raised about discussions on foreign military bases, emphasising that they are baseless and unfounded. He called on the general public to completely disregard this falsehood.

This statement comes amidst growing concerns and speculations about the possibility of foreign military bases being established in Nigeria. The government’s denial aims to quell any misinformation and reassure the public about its stance on the matter.
