NIMC Reassures Nigerians of Data Security Amid Allegations of Breaches

In response to recent allegations of a data breach by a private organization, XpressVerify, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a press statement reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ data.

On Saturday, Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) had reported that xverify, a private website had access to National Identification Numbers (NINs) and other personal information of  Nigerians on the NIMC database.

But, according to the statement released by NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke on Sunday, the Commission clarified that XpressVerify is not among its licensed partners for NIN verification and other services.

“We express our gratitude to our media partners and the whistleblowers for bringing this to our attention and wish to assure Nigerians and legal residents that there is no data breach of any sort,” the statement reads.

It added that in light of the allegations,  the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has initiated a comprehensive investigation.

The Director General emphasized the importance of maintaining top-level security to protect the NIN and other personal data of every citizen and legal resident. “No stone will be left unturned in ensuring the safety and security of the data of all enrollees,” Engr. Coker-Odusote stated.

NIMC emphasized its unwavering dedication to safeguarding, securing, and responsibly managing the data entrusted to them. “The Commission understands the critical importance of maintaining public trust and confidence in our operations,” the statement concludes.

As investigations proceed, NIMC reassures the public of its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability in data management.
