The Federal Government has unveiled plans to introduce electronic gates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and several other airports across Nigeria by March 2024, aiming to streamline the travel experience for all airport patrons.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted the significance of this development, emphasising the seamless scanning of passengers’ passports with the installation of electronic gates.
Tunji-Ojo revealed the allocation of gates, stating that Lagos would receive 17 gates, and Abuja 10, while Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu would be equipped with five, five, and four gates, respectively.
Expressing his satisfaction with the progress, Tunji-Ojo conveyed his optimism for providing Nigerians with a more pleasant travel experience, stating, “Once this is completed, Nigerians will no longer be at the mercy of immigration officers or anybody when they arrive in the country.”
He further elaborated on the process, explaining, “It’s a matter of putting your passport, scan your passport, open the gates, it reads your biometrics, you leave; you don’t need to meet with any immigration officer again unless you are a person of interest.”
