A Mental Health Expert, Dr. McEdward Nworie, on Thursday, advised Nigerians to take control of their emotions to avert depression.

Nworie, the Executive Secretary, Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos,

gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

NAN reports that depression is a mental health condition marked by an overwhelming feeling of sadness, isolation and despair that affects how a person thinks, feels, and functions.

The psychiatrist said mental depression had become rampant among the populace, particularly the youths.

He added that the increase in depression cases made it pertinent for people to pay more attention to their feelings.

According to him, every average Nigerian is mentally depressed, saying that depression can be normal, and is only an

indicator of underlying disease when feelings become excessive and interfere with daily endeavours.

Nworie listed causes of mental depression to include restless sleep, stress, anxiety, financial troubles, repeatedly going

over thoughts, childhood trauma, a job loss, or a divorce.

The doctor added that certain medical conditions might also trigger depression, including an underactive thyroid gland,

cancer, heart disease, prolonged pain, and other significant illnesses.

He said “imbalance in the brain’s signaling chemicals most times is responsible for mental depression in many patients.

“Depression can affect people of all ages, races, and socioeconomic classes and can strike at any time.

“People with depression may experience a variety of symptoms but most commonly, a deep feeling of sadness or a marked

loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities is a major indicator.”

He said that engaging in positive activities that gave happiness while avoiding anger could help to prevent depression.

He explained that anger produced a physiological crash and that the angrier one got, the more depressed one would get.

According to him, anger elevates blood pressure, increases the threat of stroke, heart diseases, cancer, depression, and anxiety, and in general depresses the immune system.

He pointed out that the inability to control emotions was a major cause of depression, adding that “if one is in a happy state, it means less of troubles, but if one is unhappy, there will be depression tendency and anxiety.

“Depression is a huge problem that affects some youths and pushes them into drug abuse.”
