Measles Outbreak in Cross River Triggers Reactive Vaccine Distribution

An outbreak of measles in the Navy and Penial school located at Akpabuyo local government areas of Cross River state, Nigeria, has been confirmed.

Confirming this, the health commissioner, Dr. Henry Ayuk, stated that the state Rapid Response is on its way to the affected regions as a sign to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.

Ayuk said the affected regions are currently giving out reactive vaccines for children and other areas notwithstanding while confirming that State Primary Healthcare development has adhered to strict immunization routines to enhance herd community

The Nigeria Navy Schools have been shut down and parents are advised to pick up their children from the boarding facility.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs, and sneezes. It can cause severe diseases, complications and even death.

An estimates of 128,000 people died from measles in 2021 who are mostly children under the age of five years, despite the availability of a safe and cost-effective vaccine.
